Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology was once the crown jewel of Fairfax County, Va.’s public education system. The school for gifted and talented students was ranked the nation’s No. 1 high school by U.S. News and World Report.
But in Wokeland, that kind of success is a recipe for racism.
And so it was for the painfully Woke school board, who recently deemed the high school’s race-blind, merit-based admissions test a “barrier” to black and Hispanic students, according to The Federalist.
According to the publication:
School officials have replaced the tests with a “holistic” popularity contest for students who best fit their “Portrait of Student,” with race-based criterion, middle school quotas, and subjective markers about whether a student is an “Ethical/Global Citizen,” “Creative and Critical Thinker,” “Goal-Directed and Resilient Individual,” “Innovator,” “Problem Solver,” “Leader,” “Collaborator” and “Communicator.”
Educrats also want to bring to the school the “anti-racism” indoctrination of critical race theory, the leftist politics ideology polluting K-12 education.
Sadder still, lawyers defending the school district in a federal lawsuit have denied that Thomas Jefferson High School is indeed a school for gifted and talented students, even though it has been so since its establishment in 1985.
Jonathan Plucker, a professor of talent development at Johns Hopkins University and president of the National Association for Gifted Children, has warned that an “ideology is turning against excellence” and “institutionalizing anti-intellectualism.”
An ideology that creates victims and depends on victims will make victims of us all.
