MADISON — In Woke Land, liberals can identify as just about anything other than conservatives.
Yet, there are a few more exceptions. Madison artist and activist Kay LeClaire found out it’s not cool to pose as a Native American. LeClaire also took on the Ojibwe name nibiiwakamigkwe.
There appears to be a whole lot of sprit name identity theft going on, LeClaire’s accusers say.
Adding to the confusion, LeClaire “uses they/them pronouns and identifies as ‘two-spirit,’ an Indigenous term which refers to people who are nonbinary,” according to Wisconsin Public Radio.
The artist formerly known as ibiiwakamigkwe served on the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Task Force, earned speaking gigs and had a paid residency at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, according to WPR.
The publication reports:
…(I)n late November, an anonymous user disputed LeClaire’s heritage claims on a New Age Frauds forum, accusing the artist of being white.
Since the news of LeClaire’s identity broke in Madison365, members of Wisconsin’s tribes and allies have spoken out.
Shannon Holsey is the president of the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians. She said claiming to be Indigenous goes beyond race, and gets into issues of federal rights and tribal treaties.
“We have to really look more deeply and examine some of those motives of why one would want to do that,” she said. “Especially because it’s not just the fact that it’s associated with race, being Native American, as a member of a federally-recognized tribe.”
LeClaire reportedly has appropriated Native identities in the ultimate show of wokeness: false virtual signaling. The activist/artist led a campaign to make the white-owned music venue, formerly known as The Winnebago, change its name. The owners caved. It’s now called the Burr Oak. It had been named after the street the venue is on, Winnebago. The owners apologized to “The Ho-Chunk Nation, The Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, and indigenous populations as a whole for our participation in the continuing appropriation of their cultures and names.”
Wisconsin taxpayer-funded institutions have fallen for LeClaire’s indigenous schtick, too. LeClaire was named the first “community leader in residence” at UW-Madison’s School of Human Ecology and its Center for Design and Material Culture. As WPR reported (using the confusing pronoun They to identify the alleged fraudster), Le Claire worked with faculty and students between March and December, picking up nearly $5,000 in private gift and grant funding.
LeClaire “voluntarily resigned” on Dec. 29, two days before the position was slated to end, according to the university.
A lot of liberals are pretending to be something they’re not these days. Fine. But when they start misappropriating taxpayer and private money in their pretense, that’s more than mental illness; that’s a crime.
Kay LeClaire, Running Gibberish, Phony Bologna, or whatever she’s calling herself these days, is why the way of the woke is a path trod by fools.
