MADISON — Are you seeking “critical consciousness”? Are you longing to be broke and woke?
Well, does the Verona Area School District have a deal for you.
The school system is inviting school system residents to learn about what they can do to “disrupt predictable outcomes for marginaized student populations.”
Critical consciousness, of course.
Yes, it’s as ridiculously left as it sounds.
It’s the “ability to perceive educational, social, economic and political oppression and to take action against the oppressive elements of society.”
Wow. That sounds radical, dude.
Oh, it is. And Verona community members may take this “multiple day opportunity” to engage in “self-reflection and experiential based learning that will deepen their understanding of opportunity gaps in schools.”
Will there be white-shaming and plenty of white privilege talk?
* Experience a deepened awareness of systemic oppression and why opportunity gaps exist
* Learn about inequities through personal narratives from facilitators
* Explore research-based strategies that can reduce implicit bias, stereotype threat and microaggressions
That sounds amazing. But there’s got to be a cost for all of this priceless woke wisdom. What’s the catch?
No catch. But you’d better sign up fast. Spots at the workshops — beginning on Monday, July 27 — are on a “first-come, first-serve basis.”
