Barrett’s defense: Blame Trump

MADISON —  You know that crappy distance-learning conference the Democratic Party is holding this week? The one that was supposed to be held in Milwaukee and bring in tens of thousands of visitors and tens of millions of dollars in cash for the Brew City but didn’t? The one that looks more like a funeral for Eleanor Rigby than a triumphant celebration of a major party candidate?

Well, Mayor Tom Barrett says it’s all President Donald Trump’s fault. Barrett, taking from the left’s “Orange Man Bad” talking points, insists Trump’s handling of the COVID-19 outbreak dashed Milwaukee’s DNC dreams.

“I think if the president had taken it seriously the first moment that he was told that this was a serious problem, I think the chances would have been much greater that we could have had an in-person convention, no doubt about that, no doubt about that,” he told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, apparently with a straight face.

Trump has been eviscerated in the mainstream media (no surprise), too. But what his critics have failed to fully examine or even report, is that the federal government broadly left control of the pandemic in the hands of states — more so, governors.

Gov. Tony Evers and his fear-mongering team weren’t stopped by the Trump administration from issuing sweeping lockdowns in March and again in April. Neither were other liberal-led states like California, Illinois and New York. Yet, California has posted the highest number of COVID-19 cases, with New York and Illinois in the top 6.

The real effort in the fight against the virus begins and ends at the state and local levels. Like, say, Milwaukee County — mainly the city of Milwaukee — which far and away leads the state in confirmed cases, at 22,556, and deaths, at 474 of 1,060 total, according to the state Department of Health Services. Barrett and the leftists that run Milwaukee and the county have enacted all kinds of policies to deal with the pandemic, including mask mandates and strict health orders that have diminished civil liberties.

Is Trump really responsible for Milwaukee’s COVID numbers?

It’s the usual gibberish from a Democrat mayor in another liberal-led city blaming conservatives who aren’t in control of the government.

It’s the usual gibberish from a party whose platform for more than four years has been to destroy Donald Trump and anyone who would stand in the way of their radical agenda.

It’s to be expected from a mayor who is playing host at an epic failure.

In fact, the only life infused into the moribund DNC this week was when the president campaigned in Oshkosh to poke the body.
