Biden taps former eco-terrorist to lead Land Management

MADISON — U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany (R-Minocqua) is calling on Wisconsin’s U.S. senators to reject President Joe Biden’s pick to lead the U.S. Bureau of Land Management — a former activist in a radical environmental group who, by her own acknowledgement, could have been charged with conspiracy to commit eco-terrorism.

Tracy Stone-Manning is now up for a full vote in the Senate after the Democrat-led Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee last week cleared the way. Republicans are appalled and, as the Washington Times reports, Biden and the Democrats have a real vetting and messaging problem on their hands.

“Someone with Ms. Stone-Manning’s dark background and ties to extremist organizations and their criminal activities make it clear that she is unfit to carry out this mandate or act as  an honest broker when it comes to land management decisions,” Tiffany said in a statement.

While Democrats are presenting a “united front” in their support of the nominee, they do so under the shadow of the problematic background of Stone-Manning, once part of the environmental terrorist group Earth First! She struck an immunity deal in 1993 and testified in a tree-spiking case.

As Tiffany notes, tree spiking is when a metal rod is hammered into a tree trunk with the intent of damaging or destroying the saws used by firefighters or loggers. The spikes can also become jammed in mill equipment, causing damage, serious bodily injuries, or even death.

Stone-Manning admitted in her 1993 testimony to retyping, editing and mailing a profanity-laced anonymous letter warning of the spiked trees in Idaho’s Clearwater National Forest. She claims she did so to protect forestry workers.

Chalk it up to a youthful indiscretion, according to her Dem defenders. The act of a “youthful sympathizer,” said Sen. Joe Manchin III (D-W.V.), who had a change of heart after originally calling for her nomination to be tossed.

The Democrats’ support of a woman engaged in eco-terrorism comes just weeks after Biden announced his new National Strategy on Countering Domestic Tourism, including environmental terrorism. Nominating Stone-Manning isn’t a good look.

“President Biden has made it clear that rooting out domestic terrorism is a top priority for his administration,” Sen. Cynthia Lummis, Wyoming Republican, said in a Thursday op-ed. “If that’s the case, Ms. Stone-Manning has no business being considered by the Senate.”

Tiffany, who represents timber and mining country, agrees. He hopes his senators do, too.

“If President Biden insists on moving forward with this misguided nomination, I hope Wisconsin’s two Senators will vote to reject it,” the congressman said. “Certainly we can find someone to head the BLM that is qualified, committed to the agency’s mission – and who isn’t linked to eco-terrorism.”
