Brave New World: Madison seeks informants to report ‘Mass Gatherings’

MADISON — It didn’t take long for Madison’s far left government to set up a coronavirus snitching initiative.

On the Public Health Madison & Dane County website, you’ll now find a form to “Report a Mass Gathering.”

“This form may only be used to report mass gatherings that are being held in Dane County,” the health agencies state. “For mass gatherings outside of Dane County, please contact your local law enforcement or health department. For current guidance of what constitutes a mass gathering, please visit the Prohibiting Mass Gatherings of 10 People or More PDF

Gov. Tony Evers’ administration issued an order earlier this week banning gatherings of 10 or more people as public officials try to deal with the spread of COVID-19 and the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The ban for some feels like a bridge too far, but the recruitment of citizen informants plunges into creepy KGB-like territory.

“Progressives (fascists) cannot be shamed, they want only one thing — to tell you how to live your life,” tweeted C. Vince Jaskowiak in response to conservative talk show host Vicki McKenna’s tweet Wednesday afternoon alerting the public to the snitching list.

Some quoted scripture.

“And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death,” tweeted Valorie Zurian, citing Matthew 10:21

The rat-on-your-neigbhor form has helpful prompts, including options for Type of Mass Gathering. Snitches may select from: Restaurant/hotel/bar; movie theater; Private gathering; Gym/fitness/recreational center; Religious center; or other.

The authorities want to know the name of the business where the illicit gathering took place, the location, and/or the individuals involved. There’s even a box where informants may “Describe the situation.” Something like, “My neighbors, the Hendersons, had a party at their house last night and I know there were more than nine people there. I could hear talking, laughing and music playing, not at a loud level  or anything but noisy enough to let me know that there was a mass gathering going on. Also, I was not invited.”

There had been no reported cases of “mass gathering” arrests as of Wednesday, but there could be.

“Violation or obstruction of this order is punishable by imprisonment, fines or both” under Wisconsin statute 252.25.

The order will remain in effect “for the duration of the public health emergency” declared in Evers’ Executive Order No. 72.
