Chantia Lewis’ new twist on Universal Basic Income

MADISON — Milwaukee Alderwoman and U.S. Senate candidate Chantia Lewis is a big proponent of taxpayer-funded guaranteed income.

Perhaps the Democrat decided to get a jump on her own personal “Universal Basic Income” —  compliments of Milwaukee taxpayers and campaign contributors.

On Tuesday, Lewis was charged in Milwaukee County Circuit Court with defrauding her city and her campaign of more than $21,000. She faces four felony counts.

It was all an innocent mistake, Lewis said in a statement, and the charges will ultimately prove unfounded.

The complaint, however, alleges the liberal candidate liberally helped herself to taxpayer funds when she falsely claimed city reimbursement for travel expenses even as she covered those costs with campaign cash.

Maybe Lewis was just testing out her program of Universal Basic Income, a socialist-style program under which every adult citizen receives a set amount of money from the government in regular payments. According to the complaint, the alderwoman was receiving payments via misappropriation of “funds belonging to her campaign by depositing campaign contributions into her personal bank accounts, as well as using campaign funds to pay for personal expenses.”

It’s pretty Basic. And it is income.

It’s also very illegal.

Milwaukee plans to tap into the nearly $400 million in direct American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding it’s receiving to launch its UBI program, the brainchild of Lewis.

“A tremendous amount of work and research has gone into the Universal Basic Income program legislation during the past few years, and I am very proud to be the primary sponsor of the file,” Lewis wrote, adding that the initiative will “significantly raise the living conditions and quality of life for those receiving the payment through the (UBI) program.”

It’s “free money” for nothing. It’s a fraud.

Which brings us back to the allegations against Lewis, a Senate candidate who once  accepted gift cards and CashApp donations under the username $D9th for her birthday, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Universally not cool income.
