Cops to DNC: Defund this!

Empower Wisconsin | July 30, 2020

By M.D. Kittle

MADISON — It’s strange. The party whose members have enthusiastically endorsed the Defund the Police movement is having a hard time securing police protection for their big liberal party in Milwaukee next month.

More than 100 police agencies reportedly are withdrawing from agreements that called for law enforcement officers to help provide security and other protective services at the Democratic Party’s National Convention Aug. 17-20.

The agreement collapsed after Milwaukee’s criminally insane Fire and Police Commission ordered Police Chief Alfonso Morales to change department policy to restrict the use of tear gas and pepper spray.

While the Democratic National Committee is planning a much smaller turnout and more of a “virtual” presence amid the pandemic, the convention is expected to draw plenty of protesters — including the more militant elements of the radical movement. The nightly scenes playing out in Portland, Ore. could look like a southeast Wisconsin fish fry compared to what could go down in Milwaukee under a red hot international spotlight.

Former Vice President Joe Biden is expected to accept the Dems’ presidential nomination in person.

Will there be enough police to secure the pep rally of a political party that has made cop-hating a virtual platform?

Strained resources

DNC officials insist the event will be safe and secure.

“As plans evolve due to the ongoing pandemic, we will continue to work with local law enforcement officials, in coordination with the United States Secret Service, to ensure that the 2020 Democratic National Convention is a safe and secure event for Milwaukee residents and everyone involved with our convention,” convention press secretary Tim Carroll told Fox News.

The Milwaukee Police Department says convention-goer safety is a paramount concern.

“MPD’s top priority remains to ensure that next month’s DNC is a safe event for all visitors and participants,” department spokeswoman Sheronda Grant told Empower Wisconsin Wednesday in an email confirming the withdrawal of the law enforcement agencies from the assistance agreement.

The West Allis Police Department will not be sending the 10 officers it originally pledged.

“It is our belief WAPD officers assisting with the DNC could be put in a position where they may not have the proper equipment to safely perform their duties and protect the public,” officials told told Fox6 News in Milwaukee.

Madison police backed out of the agreement before the exodus of law enforcement agencies.

“In early July, MPD notified Milwaukee that an accelerating COVID-19 pandemic coupled with ongoing protests in Madison, have strained City of Madison Police Department resources to the degree that we are no longer able to commit any resources to the August 2020 DNC,” Asst. Chief Paige Valenta said.

The city’s far left mayor this week received a no confidence vote from more than 95 percent of the police union. She and the mostly leftist city council have verbally attacked the city’s police officers while they’ve coddled the radical protesters who have ripped up Madison’s downtown and the Capitol Square. Many council members have voiced their support for defunding the Police Department.

The defunders

Dems like Minnesota U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar have led the defunding movement in congress. She told CNN police departments are “beyond repair” and should be shut down. That includes defunding the police department in her Minneapolis, where George Floyd, a middle-aged black man died at the hands of a police officer. It was Floyd’s death that set off a powder keg of “no justice, no peace” protests — many of them not so peaceful — across America.

House Democratic Whip James Clyburn has countered that the goal is not to defund police department but rather “restructure police forces,” according to the Boston Herald.

But that’s not what AOC wants. And as we’ve learned, what AOC and her ilk want, the increasingly socialist Democratic Party often delivers.

“It is not crazy for black and brown communities to want what white people have already given themselves and that is funding your schools more than you fund criminalizing your own kids,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) said on a private caucus call last month, according to Politico.

Members of the defund movement have proposed replacing police officers with social workers, who, they insist, are better equipped to deal with volatile situations.

Perhaps they haven’t met Samantha Hamer, a Mount Horeb school social worker who is facing multiple charges for attacking a state senator during last month’s Madison riots.

President Donald Trump’s campaign has made the left’s attack on police officers a central theme of his re-election bid.

“Democrats have shown time and time again that protecting the safety of officers and their communities comes secondary to being ‘woke,’ appeasing the left-wing mob, and defunding the very police who they were enlisting to protect their safety,” Trump Victory Spokeswoman Anna Kelly said in a statement issued Wednesday.

Evers no help for Kenosha’s riot-ravaged nerves

It’s an unsettling, but not uncommon, feeling in Kenosha these days. Nearly a month after protests over an officer-involved shooting of a black man turned into a violent free-for-all, there is a lingering sense of unease.
