Evers’ child porn-charged appointee finally steps down

By M.D. Kittle

MADISON — Gov. Tony Evers’ embattled state Veterans Affairs Board chairman resigned Monday more than two months after Milwaukee County prosecutors charged him with three felony counts of possession of child pornography.

Curtis Schmitt Jr. had refused to resign from his leadership post, even after he told police that he was addicted to adult pornography and sometimes received and downloaded child porn, according to the criminal complaint.

Evers’ office claimed the governor sent Schmitt a letter the day after the charges were filed, asking him to step down. But the Veterans Affairs Board chairman and his representatives ignored the letter. Evers —  as he did when the public called on him to remove Milwaukee District Attorney John Chisholm from office following the Waukesha Christmas Parade massacre — said he could not look into the matter until he received a complaint from a taxpayer.

Just two hours before Schmitt reportedly resigned, veteran and Republican gubernatorial candidate Kevin Nicholson sent Evers a  letter demanding the Democrat remove his 2019 appointee from office. If the governor needed a complaint to move, Nicholson said, he could consider his letter the complaint.

“As a combat veteran myself, and as a former member of the Wisconsin Board of Veterans Affairs (2013-2017), I can plainly state that it is unacceptable that you have allowed Curtis Schmitt Jr. to continue on in his capacity on the board following his admission of possession of child pornography,” Nicholson’s letter states. “By not taking proactive steps to remove him at an earlier date, you have dishonored the reputation of the Wisconsin Board of Veterans Affairs and displayed an incomprehensible lack of leadership.”

Nicholson’s Republican opponent in the governor’s race, former Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch, agreed.

“Governor Evers has done a disservice to Wisconsin veterans and is hiding behind paper thin excuses,” Kleefisch said after word hit that Schmitt had resigned. “He should have been asking for official complaints when the news first broke. This is completely inexcusable.”

Evers was quick to try to force a conservative, state Department of Natural Resources Board Chairman Fred Prehn off the board. Prehn’s term had expired in 2020, but he has refused to step aside for Evers’ appointment, Sandra Naas, because the state Senate has yet to confirm Prehn’s replacement. A Dane County court has backed Prehn’s argument.

State Rep. Scott Allen (R-Waukesha), a member of the Assembly Committee on Veterans and Military Affairs, said Schmitt’s refusal to resign is another example of Evers’ lack of leadership strength.

“What we have in this government is a governor who is completely without power. He has power in position only, but he has no real power,” Allen said. “He hides behind policy and statutes and behind so-called experts.”

Allen pointed to Evers escaping responsibility for his illegal extended lockdown orders during the pandemic by turning the keys over to his Department of Health Services secretary-designee at the time, Andrea Palm.

“This is the problem with his leadership, or the lack of his leadership. He should be influential enough to communicate with this person and say ’step down,’ and the person should have enough respect for him to step down,” Allen said.

  • Hats off to Kevin Nicholson for stepping up and getting this guy off the board. Kleefisch, it appears, dragged her feet just long enough, as the true Rino she is. Now, is Schmitt going to actually be prosecuted to the full extent of the law for this heinous crime? This “situation”is what our state has been reduced to! BOTH parties asleep at the wheel here. Lucky it’s an election year or it would likely have gone unnoticed altogether…

  • Why is this demented pervert not in jail? Does he have access to children? How do we know he’s not using porn to groom? The fact that this big ego refused to step down is indicative of a man who thinks he’s done no wrong. Ya see we just don’t get it. He is scary. Lock him up. Keep him away from children.

  • Question: Will Wisconsin voters engage in the same stupidity as it did in 2018 this year? As it is nationally, all of the reasons to dump every DUM leftist from state offices are right there in front of the voters. I realize there will be some measure of voter fraud as that is a central practice and principal of DUM electioneering. That said, how much more failure and imposition on your God-given rights are you willing to tolerate?

  • Isn’t that just like the left……….appoint without any thought. The normal American would check into their background first. If he were a conservative he would be in jail.
