Evers fails to discipline staffer in Tapegate

Empower Wisconsin | Aug. 6, 2020

Madison — Gov. Tony Evers would fine you up to $200 for not wearing a mask in a public space, but he won’t discipline a staffer for secretly recording a call — a la Richard Nixon — with Republican leadership.

Media outlets on Wednesday reported Evers’ staff found no record of disciplinary action taken against the still-unknown staffer who made the surreptitious tape in May. The conversation took place a day after the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruling that struck down the administration’s extended lockdown order.

Empower Wisconsin first reported the existence of the secret recording. Nearly three months later, Team Evers won’t divulge who made the tape. A spokeswoman on Wednesday would not answer Empower Questions as to why there is no record of discipline.

“I directed the staff to know that was improper and it will never happen again,” Evers said in a call with reporters in June, shortly after the recording became public. “This is obviously a personnel issue and discipline issues are being handled internally.”

What did the tough-talking governor do? Did he give his offending staff member a stern talking to? Or did he, despite his claims to the contrary, actually order the recordings?

We do know they were used in an attempt to try to embarrass Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (R-Rochester) for some straight-forward comments he made about where COVID-19 seemed to be striking. Ultimately, the recording backfired on Evers, who again looked, at the very least, as a disengaged executive ignorant of his staff’s actions.

Evers once more has shown to be nothing more than a figurehead, a leader led by the real leftists that run Wisconsin.
