Evers’ ‘gerrymandering’ Big Lie of the day

By M.D. Kittle

MADISON — Gov. Tony Evers said this over the weekend on UpFront: “I want fair maps. I don’t want gerrymandered Democratic maps.”

The more amazing thing is Evers said it with a straight face.

It’s his biggest lie of the day.

Joe Handrick, director of Common Sense Wisconsin  says a contradiction and an inconvenient political reality are baked into the far left governor’s disingenuous assertion.

“What Democrats define as ‘fair’ is a map that doesn’t give Republicans an advantage, and the only way to do that is by gerrymandering,” Handrick, a redistricting expert and former state lawmaker, tells Empower Wisconsin.

Evers and his phony “nonpartisan” People’s Maps Commission insist that drawing updated political districts starting from the existing maps created by Republicans a decade ago is unfair. But even when you start from a consensus point, as Common Sense Wisconsin did in putting together its redistricting proposal, Republicans maintain a state-wide advantage. It’s not about manipulation of maps. It’s about the reality of population location, as in Republicans tend to live in smaller cities or rural areas throughout the state, while Democrats bunch in larger cities, particularly Milwaukee and Madison.

That’s a fact even the most dull Democrat should know.

“As you read such stories of these Dem produced maps, the inconvenient truth is revealed. They prove the left-wing is lying about WI being super-gerrymandered. It isn’t. Even when THEY are drawing the maps the GOP has a big advantage, given how concentrated Dems are in Milw & Mad,” conservative talk show host Jay Weber tweeted.

While they’ve been abject failures at coming up with “fair maps,” Evers and fellow Democrats have successfully convinced the mainstream press (not a real chore when it comes to the accomplice media) that Democratic gerrymandering is fair.

“The Democrats are trying to redefine the term and say that we need a map that levels the playing field. The only way to get there is by (Democratic) gerrymandering,” Handrick said.

If Evers and his show commission really wanted fair political maps they would have stuck to the principles that the commission set out when it started Evers’ redistricting charade. But they have ignored most of those principles, even ignoring the Voting Rights Act.

But this governor doesn’t want fair; he wants power. And he will do anything and say anything to keep and expand it. His redistricting farce is ingrained in his and the left’s Woke equity initiatives.

“Substituting equality of opportunity for equity of outcome, in so many ways that’s simply not American,” Handrick said. “What they are trying to do in redistricting is tied to the same disdain the left has for the electoral college … They attack almost any institution or process that doesn’t guarantee that they win.”

With divided government this time around, Wisconsin’s political maps will ultimately be decided in court. As the Wisconsin constitution clearly requires, the Legislature, controlled by Republicans, will draw up the decennial redistricting plan. Evers will surely veto the maps.

But what would the maps look like if Democrats controlled the legislative branch, too?

“We would have Illinois if they were in complete control,” Handrick said. “All you have to do is look at the goofy maps coming out of that state.”

As Illinois Policy reported last month, Illinois’ majority Democrats voted to enact legislative maps that guarantee their majority in the state’s 177 legislative districts, making a lie out of Dem Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s promise to pass fair maps.

While liberals in Wisconsin clamour for the creation of an independent redistricting commission, their fellow party members in Illinois would have none of it. That’s what would happen if Dems were in control of the Wisconsin Legislature.

  • The “Fifth Column” is no longer just a historic phrase, it is active again in politics. They epitomize “The Enemy Within”, the threat that exists inside the community without showing its true face to the world, it is a coward’s war, fought in the shadows of anonymity. There is an African proverb that reads: “When there is no enemy within, the enemy outside can do you no harm.” By allowing the hidden agenda to flourish we surrender to it. It must be exposed and defeated.
