Evers: ‘I was wrong’

Empower Wisconsin | April 1, 2020

Folks,

I’ve been your governor long enough for you to know that I don’t care who gets the credit for a good idea and I’m quick to take the blame when I’ve been wrong. Well, I write to you today to tell you, I was wrong.

In my haste to issue emergency orders and executive orders, there are two words I completely forgot about: Civil liberties. The right to assemble, the right to the free exercise of your faith, the right to speedy trial by jury, the right to property, due process and the right to conduct your business and do your job without government interference.

While Chapter 252, gives me and my administration the awesome authority to declare a health emergency, I admit that I have not used this special executive power as judiciously as perhaps I should have. In addition, my administration could have done a much better job explaining the parameters and rationale behind my Safer at Home order, like why it’s essential to have daycare for your dog but not essential to get a haircut. If it seems arbitrary, you got me. I have no idea if any thought went into the designation of essential versus non-essential business.

I also think my attempt to get unlimited spending and hiring authority to deal with the Covid-19 crisis may have been misinterpreted by my friends in the legislature as an attempt to expand programs like Medicaid, which the legislature has repeatedly rejected. Let me assure that was never my intention. I really just want what is best for the citizens of Wisconsin. No more. No less. It was also not my intention to do away with voter ID and implement universal vote by mail to advantage my political party. I only want what is fair for all voters.

I deeply appreciate your patience and understanding during this time of crisis.  Together, we will weather this storm and make Wisconsin great again.

Sincerely,

Governor Tony Evers

  • Hard to tell if this is a April fools joke or not. In any regard chapter 252 is state law and can not trump the 1st amendment of the U.S. constitution: specifically paragraph 3 of chapter 252.

    • It’s an Apri Fool’s Day joke. As I’ve said, civil liberties appear to be the last thing Evers and his administration are concerned about these days. They didn’t seem to be a top priority for him before the pandemic.

  • If Evers thought he was wrong, then why doesn’t he make it right? Let’s start with something as simple as postponing the April 7th election! Recall the idiot.

  • Consider travel bans. I have heard that there are people spotting license plates from Illinois staying at hotels in Wisconsin. I have also heard of people from Illinois camping in the Crivitz area. Campgrounds should be closed. We do need to stop this virus from getting into the far north rural areas where we don’t have the capacity to treat large numbers of patients.
