MADISON — A lot of conservatives have long suspected that Gov. Tony Evers is merely a political puppet, that the real font of power is his leftist chief of staff, Maggie Gau.
Emails obtained by Empower Wisconsin through an open records request hint at who works for whom on Maggie’s Farm.
In early April, when Team Evers was shutting everything down to save us all from a virus that has liberally killed 0.02 percent of Wisconsin’s population, the administration added state parks to the list.
“Gov. Tony Evers today directed the Department of Natural Resources to close several state parks, forests and recreation trails to protect the health and safety of Wisconsinites,” an administration press release announced on April 9.
Remember? The governor’s crack staff cited unprecedented crowds, litter, vandalism and “an abundance of caution to protect public health and safety,” to help flatten that ever changing curve.
Evers, though, wasn’t so sure about taking away one of the last vestiges of freedom in Wisconsin amid his administration’s sweeping state lockdown.
Commenting on a draft of the press release that morning, Evers wondered if the problem was really all that bad.
“Not to complain, but I was talking to the warden at GOV Nelson (Governor Nelson State Park near Madison) on Sunday and he said (they) had zero problems. He was happy with the way things were working out,” Evers wrote to Gau. While Evers’ email address is inexplicably redacted from the documents, it’s clear from the chain that the communication is from the governor.
Gau curtly responds two minutes later: “Yeah unfortunately it wasn’t like that across a lot of the parks in southern WI – PC was very concerned.” PC apparently is Preston Cole, Evers’ secretary of the Department of Natural Resources.
The governor said nothing more, at least according to the emails provided to Empower Wisconsin.
When he issued his initial stay-at-home order in March, Evers advised Wisconsin residents stuck at home to get outside, maybe visit a public or state park.
Her majesty Maggie overruled Tony.
