The Texas Lesson

MADISON —  We have been reminded on numerous occasions why it’s not a good idea to disarm law-abiding citizens.

Sunday’s shootout at West Freeway Church of Christ in Texas offers the latest lesson.

While the gunman killed two people during church services, two members of the congregation quickly responded and opened fire on the gunman, “neutralizing the threat” before he could take another life.

“We lost two great men today, but it could have been a lot worse, and I am thankful our government has allowed us the opportunity to protect ourselves,” Britt Farmer, the church’s senior minister, told the Dallas Morning News.

Recent changes in Texas state law ensure the right to carry concealed weapons in churches. Members of the West Freeway Church of Christ’s “security team” did just that — and saved countless lives.

As gun-control activists in Wisconsin and across the country seek more restrictions, including government confiscation initiatives, Second Amendment advocates say guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens are saving lives.

Guns prevent an estimated 2.5 million crimes a year, according to Gunfacts.info, a website that aims at debunking “common myths about gun control.” The clearinghouse of  gun-related information bills itself as “neither pro-gun nor antigun,” but rather “pro-math and anti-B.S.”

According to the website, some 400,000 life-threatening violent crimes are prevented thanks to firearms every year. And 60 percent of convicted felons admit they avoided committing crimes when they knew the victim was armed.

The Center for Disease Control in a report ordered by President Obama in 2012 estimated the number of crimes prevented by guns could be as many as 3 million annually, as Lawrence W. Reed of the Foundation for Economic Education (FEE), noted in an article earlier this year.

“Liberty isn’t the only thing likely to be lost when gun laws are passed to appease emotions over reason, evidence, logic, and rights. Lives will most assuredly be lost, too. Lots of them,” Reed wrote.

  • Evers rode in on a fluke. We want to get any socialists we can, out of offices of power and Evers is a socialist, favoring the indoctrination of our youth away from parents and the constitutional values with the C.O.R.E. curriculum. I’ll support a strong conservative to oust him.
