Language of the left: ‘Convicted felons’ no more

Empower Wisconsin | Sept. 13, 2019

Progressives are funny.

They have perfected the politics of personal destruction and have abandoned the concept of second chances — at least when it comes to their political enemies. Liberals have no problem labelling conservatives they don’t agree with as terrorists, fascists, Nazis, or white supremacists.

But they want to soften their language for convicted thieves, murderers, and rapists.

San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors has approved “person first” language guidelines to refer to convicted felons.

The guidelines call for former inmates to be called “justice-involved” persons or “returning residents.” Parolees will be known as “people under supervision.”

“We don’t want people to be forever labelled for the worst things that they have done,” supervisor Matt Haney said. “We want them ultimately to become contributing citizens, and referring to them as felons is like a scarlet letter that they can never get away from.”

Gone, too, are terms like “addict” and “offender.”

Why, it’s almost like these “people under supervision” or “justice involved” persons never committed a crime. At least until they espouse free-market or limited-government views. Then they’ll be referred to by the left as racists, bigots, and members of the alt-right.
