Leave it to Evers: Tony’s strange definition of ‘paltry’

MADISON — Only a tax-and-spend liberal like Gov. Tony Evers could describe a $2.5 billion-plus increase in K-12 education spending as “paltry.”

The Democrat is threatening to veto the Republican-led Joint Finance Committee’s budget if lawmakers don’t cough up more money to feed the insatiable public education establishment beast.

“Of course I’m asking them to invest more,” Evers told reporters this week. “What they invested was paltry and an insult to the kids of our state.”

Paltry?

Keep in mind, this is the guy still itching for more than a billion dollars in tax hikes even as he gets to play with about $4.5 billion in federal COVID-19 relief — to spend where he sees fit.

K-12 education, too, gets a boatload of federal cash. About $2.5 billion, to be precise. Such largesse is why Republicans are proposing a cap of $128 million in new state spending. Taken together, the total education budget proposed by the JFC is a massive 17 percent increase from the current budget, which delivered a record $700 million in new state funding. And there’s a lot of new money for special education and mental health.

“For some people, no matter how much you spend on education, it’s never enough,” state Sen. Duey Stroebel (R-Cedarburg) said this week.

But for Wisconsin’s taxpayers, hit hard by Evers’ economically disastrous handling of the pandemic, enough is enough.
