Leftist education: Sun Prairie’s ’social-emotional’ learning

Empower Wisconsin | Jan. 8, 2021

By M.D. Kittle

MADISON — Sun Prairie’s Woke educrats want families to know that their children are in good hands in the wake of this week’s violent political demonstrations in Washington, D.C. — thanks to “social-emotional” learning standards.

In a letter sent Wednesday, Sun Prairie Area School District Superintendent Brad Saron and School Board President Steve Schneider tie the storming of the U.S. Capitol to the Kenosha County District Attorney’s decision not to file charges in the police-involved shooting of a black man.

In doing so, they get their facts jumbled and leave out some important context, which appears to be the foundation of leftist “social-emotional” learning.

“What we have witnessed today in Washington D.C. is not only undemocratic, but a national travesty. Storming the nation’s capital to incite violence is deeply disturbing and upsetting,” the educarats opine. “At the same time, we know that members of our community are troubled by the decision in Kenosha resulting in no charges being brought forward in the murder of Jacob Blake.”

Fact Check: Jacob Blake, 29, was not murdered. He was shot several times by a police officer in August after he repeatedly resisted arrest and appeared to reach into his vehicle for a knife, but he is very much alive. He was being arrested on a felony warrant in a 3rd-degree sexual assault case.

The educrats say they are most concerned about “our children and the emotions they are experiencing.”

Not concerned enough, however, to bring context and perspective to their social justice screed.

Their letter, of course, says nothing about independent investigators who found the Kenosha officer acted in self defense. Nothing about the three days of riots, the looting, the assaults by left-wing protesters that destroyed portions of Kenosha in the wake of the shooting. There’s no context about the tens of millions of Americans who are frustrated and furious about what they see as a rigged election system. While Saron and Schneider may not agree with their fellow Americans on that point, they certainly have students in their district whose parents feel the same way.

Like Scott Dega, a Sun Prairie community member who has had it with educators and administrators who have infused curriculum with social justice indoctrination.

“Instead of the absurd language below and platitudes about helping children ‘comprehending these events’ – an event for which you were embarrassingly unprepared with the facts….perhaps you should do a real service and explain to children to respect authority and comply with lawful orders when given,” Dega wrote in a letter to the administrators.

While the violent protests in the nation’s capital should be condemned, so, too, should the mob violence under the auspices of social justice be condemned in Kenosha and Portland and Chicago and Seattle and New York and the dozens of other seething cities in 2020.

But the equity brigade sees only “peaceful protests” in race riots.

“It’s not about politics,” Saron and Schneider insist. “It’s about our democracy and the impact of systemic racism.”

Except it’s all about politics. That’s what “social-emotional” learning standards are really all about. Left-wing politics.

But should the taxpayers of Sun Prairie and so many communities led by the painfully woke have to pay for politics in public education?

Dega thinks not.

“You two fools should stick to educating children, not indoctrinating,” he wrote.

Letter from Sun Prairie School officials:

Dear Sun Prairie Community:

What we have witnessed today in Washington, D.C. is not only undemocratic,

but a national travesty. Storming the nation’s capital to incite violence is

deeply disturbing and upsetting. At the same time, we know that members

of our community are troubled by the decision in Kenosha resulting in no charges being brought forward in the murder of Jacob Blake. We are most concerned about our children and the emotions they are experiencing. As adults, these events are

hard enough to comprehend but for children, even more so.

Please be assured our faculty, staff, and administrators are prepared to help our

students process what has transpired and to help any students who need

assistance with comprehending these events. Our social-emotional learning

standards will guide classroom conversations as we proactively support our

students’ needs. If your child has more specific needs, please reach out to your student’s classroom teacher and/or a student services staff member.

Today is not about politics. It is about our democracy and the impact of systemic

racism. And we will continue to work every day to ensure public education and

the Sun Prairie Area School District continue to be the bedrock of our sacred democracy.

Steve Schroeder, School Board President

Brad Saron, Superintendent

  • When parents aren’t intelligent enough to explain life, in truth and context, to their children, by all means default to an incompetent educational system. The blind leading the blind has always proven to be the path to success.

  • Schroeder and Sharon say “ bedrock of our sacred democracy “.
Those two dumbbells don’t even know we are a republic..!

I wonder if the 200 murders in Milwaukee in 2020 will be discussed
with the poor emotional affected students or the 800 murders in
Chicago that went down last year…..and what race of people were killing each other in those cities.?.

    Oh, the humanity !
