Madison teacher: Kids of conservatives need not apply

Empower Wisconsin | Sept 28, 2020

By M.D. Kittle

MADISON — A Madison West High School teacher, whose anti-Trump rhetoric on Facebook went beyond politics, may be facing an “internal investigation” and potential disciplinary action, a Madison Metropolitan School District spokesman tells Empower Wisconsin.

Social studies teacher Tony Zappia last week commented on President Donald Trump’s Executive Order on Combating Race and Sex Stereotyping. The order puts an end to federal contractors pushing their woke agendas and radical left narratives of white supremacy and “systemic racism.”

Zappia, definitely part of Madison’s woke establishment, clearly doesn’t like Trump’s executive order. He wrote on his Facebook page:

“The delusions continue … oh, if you support any of this please don’t send your kids to Madison West, they won’t do very well.”

Zappia’s liberal politics aside, his less-than-tolerant take that leaves little room for liberals and conservatives to “co-exist” at the high school, ticked off a lot of people online.

“He needs to be fired. So much for inclusiveness,” replied Mark Klawiter to a tweet by conservative talk show host Vicki McKenna.

“Cool that should also mean we don’t send our tax money to West High School either,” replied August Landmesser.

Tim LeMonds, public information officer for the school district, said the district office has been made aware of the message. He said the staff member was immediately contacted to address the issue, and had already deleted the post.

“The message posted on this staff member’s personal facebook page is unfortunate, and not a representation of the views or opinions of MMSD,” LeMonds said in an email to Empower Wisconsin.

He said district leadership is “actively in contact with this staff member,” but it’s a personnel matter so he is limited in what he can say.

“In general, with incidents like this, there will be an internal investigation into the incident, followed with the potential for disciplinary action based on the findings of that investigation,” the spokesman said.

Zappia is another social justice warrior in a school system immersed in radical left social re-programming under the banner of critical race theory.

“White privilege and the history of institutional racism is much more prevalent in my teaching,” he said in a 2018 Q&A for the West Bend Current.
