Marathon County pays for Woke lessons

Empower Wisconsin | Aug. 28, 2020

The painfully woke in Wausau want you to know that Marathon County is a den of white privilege and white supremacy.

To that end, the Marathon County Board of Supervisors on Thursday hosted a taxpayer-funded session titled, “The Dynamics of Implicit and Explicit Bias And Institutional Discrimination And How They Can Lead to Health Disparities and Other Outcomes Inconsistent with Marathon County’s Goals.”

Of course, by the time participants got through reading the title, the white guilt indoctrination program was half over. Social justice egg heads are big on lengthy presentation names; they think it will cover up the crap that’s contained inside.

Supervisors and others learned The Uncomfortable Truth, inconvenient as it may be, in a “Primer for Undoing Racism.” It’s Marathon County’s own 1619 Project, with New York Times-style arrogance. Participants were programmed to receive a “Deeper understanding of the historical evolution of racism. They also were assisted in developing a “lens for identifying systemic and structural racism.”

And, just for laughs, the presentation for the would-be-woke, included an exploration of “white privilege.” By the end of the session, it could be said (at least by the nonsense peddlers) that Marathon County leaders were identifying “concrete steps … to actively evolve” on race issues.

They are dealing with troglodytes, after all. Or at least that’s what the liberal elitists believe.

The presentation comes with a disclaimer: While the session was on racism against black Americans, it’s important that the work is not complete until “we repair the harm done to First Nations people, Latinx people and other People of Color, including Hmong Americans in our home communities.”

Perhaps liberal consulting firm Diverse & Resilient of Milwaukee,  brought in by the county to lead the white-people-are-bad discussions, will come back and finish the work — at a fee, of course. But at $500 for the presentation and the creation of an action plan, the indoctrination campaign comes at a steal.

The firm, Wisconsin’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) organization, has made it a mission to tell folks like Marathon County’s leaders how backward and unwoke they are. Session presenter Katie Hamm, a Master of Social Work, has been “educating” people on white privilege for decades. She’s an adjunct faculty member at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Helen Bader School of Social Welfare and consultant to nonprofits. So she’s sharing all of that wisdom with the next generation of thinkers.

“Her program work specializes in the areas of human sexuality, LGBTQ inclusion, youth development, and issues of racism and oppression,” according to Hamm’s biography. “Katie has a solid theoretical background and extensive experience with translating research into practice.”

Marathon County Administrator Lance Leonhard said the county and the city of Wausau will split the costs of the consultant’s work.

Asked about how the presentation might be perceived as “training” built on vilifying and stereotyping an entire race of people, the administrator said he makes “no value judgment on the topic,” and that he is fulfilling the goals of the board’s resolution passed last year.

  • Perhaps their next session can be “The Dynamics of Intelligent Thought and Knowledgeable Discussion; the Contrasting Perils of Institutional Sycophancy; And How the Understanding of The Conflict can Lead to Healthy Conversations and Other Outcomes Consistent with Marathon County’s Goals.” Or is that too much to ask?
