Picture this: Evers photo with pedophile tells troubling story

By M.D. Kittle

MADISON — A couple of pictures tell the story: Soft-on-crime Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett and the far left governor who appointed him smiling in photos with a convicted pedophile wanted by the FBI.

These are the people who have turned their backs on public safety in the name of liberal politics.

As Empower Wisconsin reported this week, Barrett was photographed at his backyard campaign event in June with John Brown, 56, a felon convicted of 2nd-degree sexual assault of a juvenile.

The sheriff has since scrubbed the photos from his Facebook page, but Brown’s page proudly displays them.

The sheriff, appointed by Gov. Tony Evers to fill the term of long-time Democrat Sheriff Dave Mahoney who retired last year, welcomed Brown to the event while there was an active warrant for the sex offender’s arrest. Barrett’s own deputies were searching for Brown in a joint law enforcement action with the FBI and the U.S. Marshal’s Service office.

In the “gang sweep” on June 13,  Brown was taken into custody — just days after Barrett’s backyard soiree, according to police reports. Brown told law enforcement he knew he had an active sex offender registry warrant in Dane County, said Dane County Detective Anthony Hamilton, Barrett’s challenger in November’s election.

Hamilton, who brought the matter to the public on Wednesday, said the sheriff owes the public, law enforcement officers and particularly sexual assault victims an apology.

You might say the same for Evers.

The governor is pictured smiling with Brown on at least two occasions since the felon was arrested, most recently on Aug. 1. That pic was snapped at the End of Times Ministries International church in Madison led by state Rep. Sheila Stubbs, a Madison Democrat, and her husband Pastor Godfrey Stubbs.

“State leaders you can depend on! State Representative First Lady Shelia Stubbs, Governor Tony Evans (sic), Dr. Bishop Godfrey Stubbs  and Lady Apostle Vanessa Glinton of the Bahamas,” Brown declares on one Facebook post featuring a picture of Evers with the church leaders. “… Politics at it’s best. Never give up! We the people! Governor Tony Evans in the house!”

Barrett’s campaign spokesman, Sachin Chheda, shrugged off the sheriff being photographed with Brown, telling the Wisconsin State Journal that Barrett “has his picture taken with dozens of people every week as he’s out and about in the community.”

“It’s clear that this particular individual (Brown) tries really hard to get his picture taken with politicians all the time,” Chheda told the newspaper.

But it’s also clear that Brown at least has positioned himself next to prominent members of Madison’s African-American community. He describes himself as a deacon in the church and his Facebook page includes an overload of photos of him and the Stubbses in church services, as well as pictures with many other prominent Dane County elected Democrats. There are also plenty of photos of children in the church and elsewhere.

Brown isn’t simply rubbing shoulders with Barrett, Evers and the other powerful liberals. They appear to be seeking him out. In the cynical world of politics, photographs with this prominent sex offender could well be worth some critical votes come November.

The man Barrett and Evers were photographed with is facing multiple charges in Dane County:

  • Resisting/Obstructing an Officer; two charges
  • Misdemeanor Bail Jumping
  • Felony Bail Jumping
  • Disorderly Conduct
  • Felony Sex Offender Registry Violation; two charges

Brown was 41 in 2007 when he was found guilty of sexually assaulting a juvenile (aged 12-15), according to court records. He has a long rap sheet. Hamilton said Brown was known to law enforcement for helping incite the Madison riots in 2020 that resulted in millions of dollars in damages as “Dane County law enforcement was told to stand down.”

That’s who Tony Evers and Sheriff Kalvin Barrett were standing with.

More troubling, the day law enforcement officials arrested Brown, the sheriff called the Department of Corrections Sex Offender Registry Regional supervisor. Barrett asked the program supervisor if he was going to pursue the criminal sex offender registry violation charges, according to Hamilton.

“Brown is a registered sex offender who continues to commit crimes. He currently has pending charges for repeatedly not being in compliance with the sex offender registry,” Hamilton said. Brown could serve up to 12 years in prison on those counts alone.

Yet, the convicted pedophile was set free soon after his arrest on a mere $250 bond.

Dane County’s revolving door criminal justice system has long put career criminals — including convicted pedophiles charged with violating sex offender registry laws — back on the streets. That “progressive justice” system has been whole-heartedly endorsed by a governor who campaigned on cutting Wisconsin’s prison population in half. A governor who defends prosecutors who cheaply release violent offenders who go on to kill. A governor who appointed felon awaiting trial on other felonies to his Juvenile Justice Commission.

A governor who appointed a sheriff who partied with a sex offender while his  own deputies searched for the felon.

A picture is worth a thousand words.

  • Up to the old tricks.

Feeding some more raw meat to the conservative masses.

Lee Atwater, the George H.W. Bush campaign manager in 1988: “By the time we’re finished, they’re going to wonder whether [Black rapist convicted of rape while on prison furlough] Willie Horton is Dukakis’s running mate.”

Michael Gableman’s claim that Justice Butler [Wisconsin’s first Black Supreme Court Justice] was working “to put criminals on the street” because, as a Public Defender, Butler had successfully represented Black clients, including one who subsequently was convicted of raping a child.

It is remarkable how frequently Kittle and his friends can insert race, rape, and pedophelia into their attacks on disfavored candidates when those topics have nothing to do with the candidate’s qualifications.

Photo, Black criminal, lurid crime, disfavored candidate. How many times can those buttons be pushed?

It’s the Atwater, Gableman, and Kittle combination.

    Raw meat, dripping blood.
