PowerUp: AG candidate Eric Toney

Empower Wisconsin | Oct. 17, 2022

MADISON — Attorney General Josh Kaul’s Department of Justice appears to be failing to protect young victims of internet crimes at an alarming rate, according to the Fond du Lac County district attorney vying for his job.

Eric Toney, Republican candidate for attorney general, has filed an open records request with the DOJ seeking information on an alleged backlog in Internet Crimes Against Children referrals.

“What we’re hearing is incredibly disturbing, to put it mildly, information that our attorney general has been perhaps over 1,000 of these referrals behind in having them assigned to be investigated, which appears to be a direct result of him not funding and filling these Division of Criminal Investigation agent positions,” Toney told Empower Wisconsin’s M.D. Kittle on Friday’s edition of the Vicki McKenna Show.

Kaul’s opponent has also called on the Democrat attorney general to release information on the approximately 20 percent of unfilled DCI positions.

Kaul has said, “as attorney general, we’ve worked to fill every position that we can afford to fill at DOJ.”

Toney said the failure to fill out the roster is hurting Wisconsin’s most vulnerable citizens.

Eric Toney is our guest on today’s edition of PowerUp, Empower Wisconsin’s podcast.
