MADISON — Wisconsin recently joined North Carolina and South Carolina as states on the verge of approving a resolution that would call for a Convention of States under Article V of the U.S. Constitution.
But while the state Assembly recently passed the measure, the Senate remains a big question mark.
Mark Meckler, president of the grassroots-led Convention of States, says the reluctance by some Republicans in the Senate is concerning. In fact, he had some pretty strong words for cold-feet conservatives.
“For the Republicans that don’t want to vote on this or are thinking of voting against this, it’s important to know who you are standing with, and you are standing with the fascists,” Meckler told Empower Wisconsin’s M.D. Kittle last week on the Vicki McKenna Show. “You can pretend you’re constitutional conservatives and that you’re defending the constitution. That’s all fake. The reality is you’re standing with George Soros, you’re standing with Planned Parenthood, Code Pink, Moveon, org, every major public employee union in America, the socialist party in America.”
Liberals, like some on the right, are vehemently opposed to Meckler’s movement, which calls for a convention of states to propose amendments imposing fiscal restraints on federal government, limiting its power and jurisdiction and placing term limits on members of congress and federal bureaucrats. They say doing so would open the door to all kinds of amendment proposals — a constitutional Pandora’s Box.
Meckler says such critics are on the wrong side of history. The Convention of States movement has “incredible momentum,” he says, “because people realize Washington, D.C. is out of control and not longer represents the American people.”
The conservative activist also discussed a new Convention of States Action poll that finds just how far Democrats have gone in turning their back on Israel, one of America’s truest allies.
Mark Meckler is our guest today on PowerUp, Empower Wisconsin’s podcast.
