PowerUp: Rep. Dave Murphy on UW’s big raises

MADISON — The same University of Wisconsin System that has long cried poverty is signing off on double-digit pay raises for its top educrats.

The University of Wisconsin Board of Regents this week unanimously signed off on bolstered salary ranges for chancellors, provosts and UW System executives.

UW-Madison’s next chancellor will make at least $600,000 a year, and as much as $900,000 annually under the 22 percent pay range increase. UW-Milwaukee’s chancellor could take home as much as $677,000 with a pay range hike of 32 percent. All of that is before a generous suite of taxpayer-funded benefits.

UW Regents, who approved the hefty pay increases against the advice of interim System President Tommy Thompson, insist Wisconsin’s public institutions of higher education are competing for top talent. And the competition is paying much more.

State Rep. Dave Murphy (R-Greenfield), said the people of Wisconsin already aren’t getting their money’s worth from schools teaching students what to think rather than how to think.

“Taxpayers and students are both paying a lot of money for an education that many times when they get done, the students aren’t as prepared as they should be,” Murphy, chairman of the Assembly Committee on Colleges and Universities, told Empower Wisconsin’s M.D. Kittle Wednesday on the Vicki McKenna Show.

He also pointed to substantial increases in the System ‘sunrestricted fund balances for fiscal year 2021, up 24 percent to $189 million.

Murphy expects his committee will take a closer look at the big salary bumps in the new year.

Rep. Dave Murphy is our guest today on this edition of PowerUp, Empower Wisconsin’s podcast.
