PowerUp: Tim Michels, Republican candidate for governor

Empower Wisconsin | Sept. 29, 2022

MADISON — With 40 days until Election Day, Republican candidate for governor Tim Michels says he feels good about where he is in the campaign.

A recent Trafalgar Group Poll shows the Wisconsin businessman with a slight lead on Democrat Gov. Tony Evers. Other polls have the race tight, with Evers up by a few points.

Michels said six years ago the leading polls had U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson trailing by 9 points. Johnson won. Donald Trump trailed Hillary Clinton by 12 points. Trump won.

“I’m not a career politician. The polls are the polls, but I love what I’m feeling on the campaign trail,” Michels told Empower Wisconsin’s M.D. Kittle on Wednesday’s edition of the Jay Weber Show.

The Republican has pushed a message of getting Wisconsin back on track after four years of liberal leadership. And Michels has hammered rising crime, an issue of increasing concern among voters. As the Badger Institute reports, homicides soared 41% in the rest of Wisconsin; they doubled in Milwaukee. Aggravated assaults soared 26% in Milwaukee, and auto thefts rose 46 percent elsewhere in Wisconsin, but were up 255% in Milwaukee.

Michels said those numbers have everything to do with soft-on-crime, liberal policies, led by a governor who campaigned on releasing half of the state’s prison population.

“When you give a criminal a fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh chance, that means there’s a fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh victim of those new crimes. Those are the people who are screaming for help,” the candidate said.

Tim Michels is our guest on today’s edition of PowerUp, Empower Wisconsin’s podcast.
