Poll: Americans don’t like payouts for illegal immigrants

By M.D. Kittle

The Biden administration’s plan to hand out $1 billion in checks to illegal immigrants isn’t sitting well with most Americans, according to a new poll.

The Convention of States poll, conducted by renown pollster The Trafalgar Group, finds 67 percent of American voters surveyed disapprove of Biden’s plan to pay $450,000 settlements to illegal immigrants separated from their children after illegally entering the United States during the Trump years. Nineteen percent approve of the payouts.

Another 55 percent questioned say Biden should close the southern border until a solution can be reached to deal with the crises of migrant caravans, human trafficking and drug smuggling.

The poll of 1,000 likely 2022 election voters was conducted Nov. 1-4.

“We were not surprised by the election results in Virginia and New Jersey,” Mark Meckler, president of Convention of States Action, said of the defeat of liberal politicians. ”For more than six months, our polling has consistently found that overwhelming majorities of Americans in all parties are opposed to the insane policies coming out of Washington, DC since Biden came to office. As soon as Americans had a chance to register their views at the ballot box, everyone saw the results.”

Last week, Republican House members sent a letter demanding answers from the Biden administration on the reported mass payment plan.

“Recent reports indicate that the Biden administration, as part of negotiations with a left-wing activist group, is considering paying $450,000 per person to aliens who entered the United States illegally with their children,” the letter obtained by the Daily Signal stated. It referred to the American Civil Liberties Union. “Each family of illegal aliens could reportedly receive nearly $1 million, for a total potential payout of $1 billion or more from U.S. taxpayers.”

The letter is directed to Attorney General Merrick Garland and signed by 19 Republicans, including Reps. Tom Tiffany (R-Minocqua) and Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau).

“If accurate,” the letter continued, “these reports show how the Biden administration is once again putting the interests of illegal aliens above the interests of U.S. citizens and continuing to incentivize illegal immigration into the United States.”

Asked about the settlement payouts, Biden told reporters, “That’s not gonna happen.”

The next day, however, White House principal deputy press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that though the $450,000 figure is higher than what will be offered, the president is still “perfectly comfortable” with the Justice Department settling with families separated at the border.

It’s insanity, Meckler said, and Americans know it.

“For the good of the nation and for the good for their own party, the left needs to reverse course immediately and get back to common sense,” he said. ”Halting ridiculous payments to criminals who violated our laws and came here illegally would be a good start, and stopping more of those people from illegally crossing would be another one.”
