MADISON — As congress passes a $1.7 trillion omnibus spending bill to keep the bloated federal government operating, you can bet the Convention of States movement will generate a lot more interest in the weeks and months ahead.
Wisconsin this year joined three other states calling for a Convention of States under Article V of the U.S. Constitution to consider three amendments — balanced budget, term limits on congress and federal officials, and limiting the administrative state’s power. A total of 19 states have passed a Convention of States resolution to date.
Mark Meckler, president of Convention of States Action, said he expects several more states to join the ranks in the year ahead — bringing the total to within single digits of the 34 states needed to call the convention. Thirty-eight would be required to ratify any amendments that are proposed.
The fact that congress is even considering spending $1.7 trillion of taxpayer money “proves to us how badly we need a Convention of States,” Meckler told Empower Wisconsin’s M.D. Kittle this week on the Vicki McKenna Show.
