PowerUp: Evers’ Green New Deal

Empower Wisconsin  | April 22, 2022

MADISON — Gov. Tony Evers this week released his Clean Energy Plan, a potentially very expensive AOC-style Green New Deal introduced at a time of soaring gasoline and energy prices.

Evers insists his roadmap to carbon-free electricity generation by 2050 is not only doable, it’s going to be an economic boom for the Badger State. While he doesn’t site important facts, like costs, the governor says rapidly replacing coal and oil with renewable energy sources will create tens of thousands of jobs. Never mind the fact that renewables like wind, solar and hydropower fill a fraction of the state’s energy needs.

It’s a fantasy, and a costly one at that, says Scott Manley, Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce’s senior Vice President for Government Affairs.

“It’s 172 pages of how to make energy more expensive in Wisconsin, because apparently we’re not paying enough,” Manley told Empower Wisconsin’s M.D. Kittle Thursday on the Jay Weber Show.

Evers’ Green New Deal starts off with a staple of climate change alarmist policy: An energy tax. The plan would double taxes on monthly electric and home heating bills, Manley said. Evers worked the tax increase into his two budget proposals. Republicans in the Legislature shut it down.

Scott Manley is our guest on this edition of PowerUp, Empower Wisconsin’s podcast.
