MADISON — Mark Meckler, co-founder of the Tea Party Patriots and Citizens for Self Governance, has been helping lead the charge for a Convention of States.

He spoke this week to conservative talk show host Vicki McKenna on NewsTalk 1130 WISN about the drive to make Wisconsin the 16th state to support invoking Article V of the constitution. The Assembly on Tuesday passed a resolution which, pending Senate approval, would do just that.

“The reason the framers put it in (the constitution) very specifically was to make sure we could exercise the power to restrain an out-of-control federal government, if and when the time came. It seems to me that time is here,” Meckler said.

The resolution calls for the national convention to make proposals that “limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government, impose fiscal restraints (including balanced budget and spending cap measures), and place term limits on federal officials.” Ultimately, the proposals could lead to constitutional amendments with approval of state legislatures.

Alec Zimmerman, spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau), told Empower Wisconsin the resolution is “under consideration” for the Senate’s March calendar. Because the measure is a resolution, it would not require the signature of Gov. Tony Evers.

Vicki’s interview with Mark Meckler is today’s Power Up podcast.
