MADISON — Just days into the new school year and it appears the COVID-19 era virtual learning model is as effective as ever — which is to say it’s pretty much a failure.
State Sen. Chris Kapenga (R-Delafield) says he has heard from educators in Milwaukee Public Schools who tell him 50 percent of their students aren’t showing up to log on.
“So you’ve got one of the worst school districts in the entire nation consistently, and now you’ve got a large portion of the kids who aren’t even logging in online for the classes. So they’re not getting an education,” Kapenga told Empower Wisconsin’s M.D. Kittle last week on the Jay Weber Show. “The kids are the ones who are getting hurt here.”
“I hope the governor, who is supposed to be an education expert, starts taking a little different trail from what he’s being told from the Washington hacks on the liberal left. He’s got to start thinking about our kids and the quality of education and not elections and toeing the line,” the senator added.
Kapenga recently introduced a bill aimed at protecting schools, businesses and homeowners from frivolous lawsuits related to COVID-19. Another proposal would expand the window of open enrollment in Wisconsin’s pre-K-12 schools, giving parents the opportunity to move their kids out of failed virtual learning education.
