Scot Ross needs to go

MADISON — Leftist bomb thrower Scot Ross marked his first day at the Wisconsin Ethics Commission by characteristically spewing incendiary comments about Republican leadership.

It was the kind of rhetorical nastiness that Wisconsin politics watchers have grown accustomed to from the former director of liberal attack machine One Wisconsin Now. But it’s the kind of vitriol that could get him tossed from a state commission that must check political biases at the door.

State statute addresses removal from office of appointed officials. Ross could be removed from the commission by an officer who reports him and possibly by a joint resolution of the Republican-controlled Legislature — after an inquiry initiated by a bipartisan request, according to Rick Esenberg, president and chief counsel for the Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty.

Empower Wisconsin on Tuesday called for Ross to step down or be removed from office following Tuesday’s Ethics Commission meeting.

As part of an extensive rant that was completely unrelated to his role as commissioner, let alone the objective of the commission, Ross noted the race of three GOP leaders as if to suggest they had used their power to treat African Americans unfairly.

“Black people are treated unequally by the police. Black people are treated unequally in the workplace. Black people are treated unequally in the housing market. Black people are treated unequally in schools. Black people are treated unequally in health care. And most assuredly Black people are treated unequally at the voting booth, where the right to vote has been under savage assault,” Ross said.

“Let us not forget, we are all here because three white men with power, Scott Fitzgerald, Robin Vos and Scott Walker, disbanded the independent agency which preceded the body because they were angry that they were being held accountable for ignoring the campaign coordination prohibitions in this state.”

Adam Jarchow, former state representative and President of Empower Wisconsin, said Ross needs to resign immediately or be removed from his position.

“Scot Ross’ job is to enforce state ethics laws impartially, but his hate-filled rant against our Republican leaders has rendered him unable and unwilling to review the law and issue opinions impartially, Ross lacks the judgment and the temperament to serve on the ethics commission,” Jarchow said.
