Steil on committee to ‘Restore the People’s House’

By M.D. Kittle

MADISON — Fresh from his re-election victory in the Democrat’s gerrymandered 1st Congressional District, U.S. Rep. Bryan Steil has been tapped to serve on the GOP’s transition team that puts Republicans back in control of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The Janesville Republican’s work will focus on “Restoring the People’s House.”

Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who regained the seat of power two years ago in a Democrat sweep at the polls, has severely limited general public access to the U.S. Capitol. The California Democrat has used the riots of Jan. 6, 2021 and COVID as a pretense to lock down the Capitol.

One of Steil’s tasks will be to “reopen the Capitol to the people it serves,” according to a press release.

“It’s past time that we re-open the People’s House. I’m committed to ensuring the House of Representatives is open and accessible to the people we are here to serve,” he said. “I am eager to get to work with my colleagues on this team for a successful transition into the 118th Congress.”

It’s safe to assume that Republicans will end Pelosi’s long-standing policy of proxy voting, allowing members to vote on bills remotely. Following the election, which points to Republicans narrowly taking back power in the House and sending Pelosi packing as speaker, Pelosi extended remote voting until Christmas Day.

“We will immediately reopen the Capitol and end the Democrat proxy voting and remote work schemes that have inflicted untold damage to this institution,” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif) wrote in a letter to his colleagues.

Weeks before the midterms, McCarthy released the Republicans “Commitment to America” detailing the party’s vision for governance over the next congressional session. He said Republican committees will “immediately start holding the (Biden) administration accountable for its incompetence and abuses of power.”

“These Transition Teams will ensure we hit the ground running on issues that Democrats have ignored or made worse for the American people under one-party rule, all while shutting out our fellow citizens from the People’s House,” McCarthy said.
