Tammy Baldwin: I believe Joe

MADISON — It’s interesting how quickly #MeToo, “Believe Women” principles disintegrate when liberals find their man in the crosshairs of sexual assault allegations.

Case in point, U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin.

The Madison liberal is giving the benefit of the doubt to Joe Biden, the Democratic Party’s presumptive presidential candidate. The handsy former vice president with a hair-sniffing fetish, is accused of sexually assaulting a former aide in the early 1990s when he was a U.S. senator.

Biden’s camp has denied the allegation. His accuser, Tara Reade, alleges the assault occurred in the basement of a Capitol Hill office building in the spring of 1993. She filed a police report last week. Reade originally went public with the allegation last year, when several women made similar charges.

The New York Times earlier this week reported that no former Biden staff members corroborated any details of Reade’s allegation and that reporters “found no pattern of sexual misconduct by Mr. Biden, beyond the hugs, kisses and touching that women previously said made them uncomfortable.”

That was good enough for Tammy.

“There’s a statement that Joe Biden and his team have put out and there is a report, I believe in The New York Times, indicating that there’s not corroboration,” Baldwin stated Wednesday, according to a tweet by the Milwaukee Journal’s Patrick Marley.

If you’ll recall, Baldwin wasn’t as reserved in her judgment of conservative Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in 2018 when he was going through a brutal Senate confirmation process. Democrats quickly judged the justice as guilty of a suspect sexual assault allegation in the early 1980s, despite the nominee’s vehement denials of the accusations.

“I support the bipartisan call for the White House to reopen the FBI background check investigation of Judge Kavanaugh,” Baldwin tweeted at the time. “There should be no vote on this lifetime nomination for our highest court until the Senate has all the facts about serious and credible allegations made by women.”

Baldwin instantly believed Kavanaugh’s accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, saying she found her allegations “to be serious, to be credible.” Not so much for Biden’s alleged victim.

All Tammy needed to believe Biden was a liberal newspaper’s “investigation” into the allegation.

Never mind the old Gray Lady (the New York Times, not Baldwin) has been mocked for taking a full 19 days to investigate Reade’s accusations while it immediately and lustily covered the allegations against Kavanaugh.

Perhaps Baldwin and the many other liberals who have leaped to Biden’s defense are discovering that due process does indeed matter..

Not likely.

Baldwin this week endorsed old, Quid Pro Joe. She told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that voters are looking for “a steady hand.”

Interesting turn of phrase.
