Toney concedes, other statewide races too close to call

MADISON — In the murky waters of a red wave that seemed to fizzle in Wisconsin, Republican candidate for attorney general Eric Toney conceded to liberal AG Josh Kaul in a razor-thin race before all of the votes were counted.

But early Wednesday morning, the Associated Press said the race was too close to call. As of 4 a.m., Kaul led the Fond du Lac County district attorney by more than 30,000 votes — with 99 percent of precincts reporting. It was a narrow 1.2 percent lead for Kaul.

Sources told Empower Wisconsin the Toney campaign was reviewing the numbers.

In his concession speech, Toney said there just didn’t appear to be enough votes to put him over the top.

“To our law enforcement out there, I’m sorry that I can’t take this across the finish line for you,” the Republican candidate said. “But I still proudly stand with you and so appreciate the work that you do in communities to keep us safe.”

Toney campaigned hard against Kaul’s liberal record, tying the Democrat to the progressive justice movement, spiking violent crime rates and defund the police allies.

In other statewide races … Incumbent Secretary of State Doug La Follette, a Democrat who has held the office nearly non-stop since the Ford administration, led Republican Amy Loudenbeck by a tenth of a percentage point, less than 3,000 votes, with 99 percent of the vote in.

John Leiber, Republican candidate for Treasurer, led Democrat Aaron Richardson by 1.6 percent, or about 43,000 votes, with 99 percent of precincts reporting. Both races were too close to call as of 4 a.m.
