Tool of the Week: Controlling Tony

Empower Wisconsin | Aug. 3, 2020

MADISON — Of all the strained logic and absurd arguments Gov. Tony Evers has used to defend his statewide mask mandate, the “speed limit” defense most betrays the Democrat’s ignorance of the separation of powers.

In issuing his constitutionally questionable order, Evers pushed his apocalyptic narrative that all of Wisconsin will perish amid the pandemic without a thin, cloth face covering. It’s the only way to “flatten the curve,” he insists once again.

He then took aim at what he surely considers to be Wisconsin’s “deplorables,” the people who don’t want to wear a mask for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the fact that they don’t believe this governor has the authority to unilaterally issue such an order. (Spoiler alert: They’re right).

“You may be frustrated about having to wear a mask, some people are frustrated about having to obey the speed limit, but they do that, too,” Evers said. “This is about life and death.”

No, for Evers and the leftists who really run the administration, it’s about politics and power. The Second Branch under Evers has shown at every turn it’s not interested in the First Branch’s input in tackling the pandemic, even as Evers’ falsely complains the Republican-led Legislature isn’t offering any ideas. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (R-Rochester) confirmed again this week that Evers rolled out the mask mandate without any input from Republicans.

More so, the speed limit argument shows a complete lack of understanding — accidental or willful — of how representative democracy works.

Who determines speed limits? The legislative branch. Who makes the laws? The legislative branch. Who doesn’t make the laws? Everybody but the legislative branch. You see, the problem is, Tony and his lefty friends think they get to make the laws, enforce the laws, and interpret the laws — three branches in one. That’s what despots do, not governors in a republic.

Empower Wisconsin Twitter followers reminded the old school teacher and former state education chief what he should have learned in junior high more than a half century ago.

Tony’s trouble with the separation of power makes him dangerous to representative democracy. It also makes him a tool.

  • And just where is Speaker Vos on this issue? He has an obligation to convene with the Senate and overturn this violation of a fundamental doctrine of the “republican form of government.” U.S. Const., Art. 4, Sec. 4. As things stand, Vos is demonstrating why Re-PUBEs cannot be trusted to govern. NOTE: I am NOT advocating in any way that marxist DUMs should be granted ANY access to the levers of power. I am stating that we should be voting for CONSTITUTIONALISTS, not Re-PUBEs; the latter will (and do) sell us out at the first instance of pearl clutching.
