Tool of the Week:  Jodi Emerson, ignorance superspreader

Empower Wisconsin | Feb. 28,  2022

Ignorance of the law is no excuse. The same should hold for ignorant lawmakers demonizing law enforcement.

State Rep. Jodi Emerson (D-Eau Claire) delivered her version of the 1619 Project last week on the Assembly floor.

“If a system is racist, and we have to admit that the history of law enforcement did have its roots in racism,” she said as if stating a fact. She paused after vocal objection from some of her colleagues, then insisted, “When it starts out as slave catchers, I’m sorry, it is racist.”

How ignorant.

Or is it more than ignorance?

Emerson isn’t the first liberal to espouse the leftist, cop-hating lie that law enforcement is steeped in racism. The idea is at the core of the extreme social justice movement that insists that the United States of America was built on foundation of white supremacy and remains a white supremacist nation.

That’s false, and so is the idea that policing started as slave patrols.

As Jonah Goldberg noted in a 2020 op-ed, policing in Southern slave states has some roots in slave patrols. But policing doesn’t.

Law enforcement has a long and storied history, certainly dating back before Augustus Caesar toward the end of his reign (27 BC – AD 14) created the cohortes urbanae to police Ancient Rome.

As Goldberg writes:

Policing in England takes rudimentary form with Henry II’s proclamation of the Assize of Arms of 1181. In the 1600s England established constables and justices of the peace to oversee them. The Metropolitan Police Act created the first recognizable police force in the U.K. in 1829.

Meanwhile, in America the first constables were created in the 1630s in what came to be known as New England. Boston has the oldest “modern” police department. It was created in 1838. New York and Philadelphia soon followed.

They were not created to search for runaway slaves.

Wisconsin, a free state with a staunch abolitionist streak in the days of human bondage, certainly had police and they weren’t much interested in slave catching in a state famous for being part of the Underground Railroad.

While her fellow liberals and members of the mainstream media refused to check Emerson’s sweeping generalizations, state Rep. Dave Murphy (R-Greenfield) did.

“Representative Emerson’s claim that law enforcement is racist twists the facts, ignores Wisconsin history, and is a slap in the face to all those who serve or have served our communities by putting their lives on the line to make us safer,” Murphy said. “Statements like these will only increase political polarization, increase mistrust of police, and make it more dangerous for law enforcement to carry out their duties. Once again, Wisconsin Democrats are displaying just how out of touch they are with reality and mainstream Wisconsinites.”

But ignorance is bliss for the tools of the left’s race-centric politics of division. Emerson is just another tool in that radical campaign.

For that, she is Empower Wisconsin’s Tool of the week.

  • She and her extreme left friends are counting on their audience being ignorant of history and willing to believe anything they are spoon-fed. Unfortunately most of the people she panders to are exactly that.

  • We had slaves, that’s true. Also true black people owned slaves. I don’t know how the left can say that we are a racist nation…….we elected a black president. However that black president yelled “racist” every time someone didn’t agree with him. And why would we agree with him, he tried and succeeded in turning Americans against Americans.
