Tool of the Week: The Bobbsey Twins, Lasry and Godlewski

Empower Wisconsin | Aug. 1, 2022

And then there was one.

In curiously domino-effect order last week, three of the four leading Democrat candidates vying for the Wisconsin U.S. Senate seat held by incumbent Republican U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson dropped out.

First Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson exited the race. Apparently not enough Wisconsin voters wanted to “go Full Nelson.”

Then trust fund baby and Milwaukee Bucks daddy’s boy Alex Lasry departed. Perhaps daddy Lasry promised junior all the Budweiser he could drink if he’d just stop pissing all of his inheritance away on a pointless political campaign.

Finally, state Treasurer (speaking of pointless) Sarah Godlewski bowed out. Looks like Dems were saying nope to this would-be-Leslie Knope.

The losers left the race just days before Wisconsin’s Aug. 9 partisan primaries. Curious? Maybe a little too curious.

“Showing their lack of respect for voters and the democratic process, the power brokers of the Democrat party have now cleared the field for their most radical left candidate,” the Oshkosh Republican tweeted Friday after Godlewski announced her decision to drop out. “Socialist policies have produced this mess, & a radical left Senator from Wisconsin is not the solution.”

The three amigos all claimed they were quitting the Senate race to consolidate their resources behind Wisconsin part-time lieutenant governor and full-time Dem U.S. Senate candidate Mandela Barnes.

More so, they quit to beat Johnson, or so they say.

“It’s clear that if we want to finally send Ron Johnson packing, we must all get behind Mandela Barnes and fight together,” Godlewski said in a statement.

It’s clear they spent a butt ton of money — a chunk of it from donors — on a primary campaign the Democrat Party had already decided. Barnes is their man. Of course, he’s accomplished nothing (with the exception of campaigning for U.S. Senate) in his 3 1/2 years as Wisconsin’s second-in-command. But Barnes checks the Democrat Party’s identity politics boxes for the most part.

Nelson getting out makes sense. He had little money, and less name recognition. Not even the Spin Doctors  could save liberal Tom’s faltering campaign.

But the well-heeled Bobbsey Twins, Lasry and Godlewski, are multi-millionaires with plenty of money to spend, certainly through a fast-approaching primary election.

Godlewski, whose net worth was pegged as high as $60 million, and Lasry, with recorded assets as high as $273 million, have benefitted immensely from the free market system. Now they’re throwing their weight (and their money) behind a guy who declared at a UN climate change conference that it’s time to “stymie capitalism.” Not to mention all of the other radical, wacko things Barnes has said and done.

The millionaires are backing Barnes even though he attacked their millions.

“Most Senators couldn’t tell you the cost of a gallon of milk. Or how much beef has gone up this year,” Barnes says while pushing a grocery cart through a store in his first campaign ad. “But I’m not like most Senators, or any of the other millionaires running for Senate.”

Are Lasry and Godlewski self-loathing, wealthy elites or are they just tools of a radical left Democratic Party that has ripped out every page except class warfare and identity politics in its political strategy book?

They’re tools — collectively Empower Wisconsin’s Tool of the Week.
