Tool of the Week: The ‘feckless’ Tony Evers

Empower Wisconsin | April 6, 2020

By M.D. Kittle

MADISON — Gov. Tony Evers is often in the running for Empower Wisconsin’s dubious Tool of the Week honor.

This week, it wasn’t even close.

The Democrat had ticked off his fellow liberals by long insisting, rightly, that Wisconsin’s spring election scheduled for Tuesday must go on. Evers seemed to agree with the Republican majority in the Legislature that our republic must continue to function, even in times of crisis. The many elected positions on the ballot must be filled because A) that’s a constitutional requirement and B) those elected representatives need to be in place to respond to the COVID-19 outbreak.

But Evers again proved he is a political puppet whose strings are moved by liberal activists.

So, on Friday, a few days before the election, the governor issued yet another executive order, this one calling on the Legislature to meet at 4 p.m. the next day for a special session. He wants the Legislature to approve changes to state election law that would allow for an all-mail election.

Evers surely must know what even the near-useless Wisconsin Elections Commission knows. A mail-in election at this point is an impossibility.

Along with an intervening court decision that ordered absentee ballots be accepted until six days after the election, Evers’ 11th-hour order turned a difficult situation into an election mess.

“I think what we have right now is a terrible mess and chaos,” Bob Spindell, a Republican member of the Elections Commission told Empower Wisconsin. “When you have chaos like this, there will be voter fraud, no question about it. That’s when voter fraud takes place.”

It seems the liberal activists are using the pandemic to go after voter ID and other election integrity laws they despise. For the most part, the courts have stopped them.

Evers is one of the tools they’re using to try to make their dreams come true.

The Republicans immediately rejected the governor’s political ploy.

“Unfortunately, it’s this type of feckless leadership Wisconsin has come to expect of the governor in the face of this crisis. Instead of remaining strong to ensure our representative democracy continues, he caves under political pressures from national liberal special interest groups,” said Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (R-Rochester) and Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau) in a joint statement.

“Feckless” pretty much sums up the tool that is Tony Evers, Empower Wisconsin’s Tool of the Week.
