Will Chisholm charge BLM protesters?

Empower Wisconsin | Aug. 17, 2020

MADISON — The president of Milwaukee’s police union says he has no confidence that Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm will charge anyone in connection with a “peaceful protest” in Wauwatosa that turned violent.

“I honestly believe he will not be charging anybody. I think he wants to give into those who are running the show, and I think he wants to make sure that nobody is ever charged,” Dale Bormann Jr., president of the Milwaukee Police Association, told Empower Wisconsin on Friday’s Vicki McKenna Show. “We see it with the city attorney already, where he’s not charging anybody for any of the curfew violations.”

Chisholm, a Democrat, has not said whether he is considering charging Black Lives Matter protesters who police say “targeted” Wauwatosa Officer Joseph Mensah on Aug. 8 while he was at his girlfriend’s home. They say demonstrators vandalized the house, physically assaulted Mensah, and someone fired a gun at the house.

The Black Lives Matter movement has made Mensah the face of police brutality and social injustice in suburban Milwaukee, demanding the black police officer be fired and charged with homicide. They’ve received the backing of most on Wauwatosa’s woke city council.

Mensah is on paid administrative leave while investigators look into the officer’s fatal shooting of 17-year-old Alvin Cole. The black teen allegedly fired a handgun at officers at Mayfair Mall during the Feb. 2 shooting.

Mensah has fatally shot three suspects in five years; the two previous officer-involved shooting cases have been ruled justified, with the Milwaukee County DA’s office finding that Mensah acted in self-defense.

Chisholm, a partisan Democrat who politically weaponized his office to target the left’s political enemies in secret and unconstitutional John Doe investigations, doesn’t seem interested in charging radical activists engaged in what appears to be clear criminal conduct.

“it appears Chisholm is handpicking who he’s going to go after,” Boormann said.

As Empower Wisconsin reported last week, state Rep. David Bowen has accused police of lying about the protest. The Milwaukee Democrat, who says he was at the Wauwatosa march, insists the “victim narrative put forth by Mensah and now the Wauwatosa Police Department is totally inaccurate, irresponsible and false.”

But photos and video of the incident show a crowd of some 60 demonstrators quickly turning aggressive and vandalizing the property.

Detective John Milotzky, president of the Wauwatosa Peace Officers Association, said Bowen could be charged with being party to a crime.

But Boormann said he doesn’t think any of the rioters will face justice. He said it happens over and over again, and lawmakers like Bowen and Rep. Jonathan Brostoff (D-Milwaukee) are often in the middle of the disorderly demonstrations.

“There are a couple of state legislators out there each day and night marching with the protesters,” MPA’s president said. “I have no problem with protesting, but someone in that crowd eventually makes it non-peaceful. Our officers do the best that they can with the protesting, they’re just asking people to be peaceful. Unfortunately, when they don’t we have major problems in the city and elsewhere.”
