Will Evers shut down in-class school again?

Empower Wisconsin | Aug. 4, 2020

MADISON — State Sen. Steve Nass (R-Whitewater) asserts education officials in his 11th Senate District are indicating Gov. Tony Evers will use his new Emergency Public Health Declaration to cancel in-person classes statewide.

Evers in recent weeks has said such decisions would be left up to local school districts, but, as Nass pointed out, the Democrat has been feeling a lot of pressure from his teacher union pals to issue a statewide order to begin the school year with all virtual learning.

Doing so now would complicate life for not only the education officials who have set plans for conducting in-school classes, but for the parents counting on sending their children back to school.

“I have been hearing from education sources that Governor Evers will act within days to prohibit in-person classes at the start of this school year. As I feared, Governor Evers and DHS Secretary-Designee (Andrea) Palm are using the illegal emergency declaration to achieve another political objective for their allies in certain Wisconsin teachers’ unions,” Nass said in a press release.

Evers told WTMJ-4 on Monday that he had no plans to mandate all-virtual learning.

“There’s no secret plan out there,” the governor said.

He also said on the campaign trail he had no plans to raise taxes. His first budget included hundreds of millions of dollars in tax increases. Evers said he didn’t think he had the authority to issue a statewide order mandating Wisconsinites wear face coverings, until last week when he issued his mask mandate.

Evers said he would work with the Republican-controlled state Legislature … well, you get the idea.

Several lawmakers have told Empower Wisconsin that they’ve heard from a long list of constituents concerned that Evers will order all-virtual learning to start the school year.

“The Legislature has the power to stop Evers and Palm from doing more damage under the illegal state of emergency,” Nass said. “Failure to act by either house would make the Legislature complicit in empowering Evers and Palm, two of the most untrustworthy people to serve in state government, in my opinion.”
